The William Huffman Higdon Reunion attendance was really down this year, only 45. I am 55 years old and this is lowest count I have ever seen. Past reunions have always been one hundred plus. My father Sam Higdon always said when his generation was gone the reunion would die and I'm almost in agreement. We used to have a lot of family friends and church members that would attend, but no more, it's hard just to get all the family there. This is really sad.
The Reunion was always held in September on Maj. W.H. Higdon's birthday. I have heard the old timers talk about whole families arriving in wagons and camping out all week just for this occasion, and not all were related.
I have photos taken in the 1930's, 40's, 50's, and 60's of large crowds of people. I think people just liked to have their pictures taken back then. In the late 1970's we had a reunion and people from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia showed up; must have been over two hundred and we had a great time. We had a reunion photo a few years ago taken in front of the church and that was a real chore to get everybody out there. We have not tried that since.
If anyone has any suggestions on how to get the attendance up, please let us know. I would really hate to see this reunion die out.
