Tommy is the father of Leonard Thomas Higdon, Melissa Dawn Higdon, and Charles Daniel Higdon. Tommy's sister is Bonnie Higdon Atkins; his brothers are Charles P. Higdon and Walter Quillen Higdon. Tommy's parents were Leonard and Nettie Higdon.

In January 2003, Jim Hersom was granted permission to use Tommy's photograph and the information above on a web site for the 327th Infantry that is being developed by former members of the unit. He shares: "I served with Captain Higdon in Vietnam. At the time, he was the company commander of Company E, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. I was his company clerk.
