Captain Leonard Thomas "Tommy" Higdon

The Vietnam War lasted from 1959 through 1975. The war divided our country as much as the Civil War; it shattered millions of lives, hopes, and dreams. Captain Leonard Thomas Higdon was killed by enemy mortar, May 21, 1970, while on his second tour of duty in Vietnam. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial opened in 1982; Captain Higdon's name is located on Wall W, Panel 10, Line 75. His name is also on the Vietnam War Memorial near Dothan Alabama, for Alabama born veterans. (Tommy was born in Monroe County, Alabama.)

Tommy is the father of Leonard Thomas Higdon, Melissa Dawn Higdon, and Charles Daniel Higdon. Tommy's sister is Bonnie Higdon Atkins; his brothers are Charles P. Higdon and Walter Quillen Higdon. Tommy's parents were Leonard and Nettie Higdon.

In January 2003, Jim Hersom was granted permission to use Tommy's photograph and the information above on a web site for the 327th Infantry that is being developed by former members of the unit. He shares:
"I served with Captain Higdon in Vietnam. At the time, he was the company commander of Company E, 1st Battalion, 327th Infantry, 101st Airborne Division. I was his company clerk. At the time of his death he was on Fire Support Base Bastogne. I was on Camp Eagle, the division base camp...
I have never forgotten him and have had an opportunity to visit the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C. and see his name on the wall."
