Elisa Walter, Our Newsletter Editor

The Higdon Family Association members are delighted to have Elisa Walter as our new newsletter editor. Many of us met her at the 2005 reunion in Frankfort, Kentucky. Elisa shares some of her family history with us:

My father, Charles Franklin Higdon was born 2/11/1918 in Grayson County, Kentucky to Joseph Edward Higdon-b 1892 and Carrie Belle Smith-b 1898. Joseph was the son of Robert Heston Higdon-b 7/9/1858 and Elizabeth Kerr-b 4/3/1864. Robert Heston was the son of John Uriah Higdon-b 1809 and Mary Jane Whobrey Molahan-b 1822. John Uriah was the son of Francis Xavier Higdon-b 1765 in Maryland d 5/8/1840 in Grayson Co., Kentucky and Allaweeza Molahan-b 1770. Francis Xavier was the son of Benedict Leonard Higdon Sr.-b 8/6/1738 and Joannah Dent-b 1747.

After the death of Benedict Leonard Sr., Joannah and her children; Francis Xavier, James, Elijah Dent and Ellen migrated to Washington County, Kentucky with the Burtle Family. ( Ellen was married to James Andrew Burtle ). Joannah died in Washington County-date or burial unknown. The Burtle family, along with Ellen and her brothers moved into Grayson County in about 1808. Benedict Leonard Sr. was the son of William Higdon-b 1709 and Jane Boarman-b 1715. William was the son of the original John Higdon I of St Mary's County, Maryland and his wife Millicent Bowling. So, my father's direct line is: John I- William- Benedict Leonard Sr- Francis Xavier-John Uriah- Robert Heston- Joseph Edward- Charles Franklin, my father.

My mother was also a Higdon before marriage. She actually had two connections to the name. Her father was Guy Higdon-born 7/15/1876 in Daviess County, Kentucky, and died in 8/1937 in Louisville, Kentucky after being struck by a hit and run drunk driver. Her mother was Mildred Gertrude Sims- born 5/1886 and died 8/1965. Guy's line is as follows; Guy Higdon born to William Riggs Higdon-b 1822 and Sarah Jane Storm-b 1835. William Riggs was the son of Charles William Higdon-b 1800 in Maryland and Nancy Riggs-b 1799. I know that Charles William was the son of one of these men; Thomas Higdon Jr., Peter Higdon or Erasmus Higdon. I am currently working on finding some kind of linking documentation. All 3 of these men are 3rd generation descendants of the original John Higdon I.

I know this is getting long but one more connection is through my mother's grandmother; Mary Ellen Alvey. Mary Ellen was the daughter of Nancy Higdon-b 1822 and Benjamin Francis Alvey-b 1820. Nancy was the daughter of Ignatius Higdon Jr.-b 1783 in Maryland and Mildred Dyson-b 1789. Ignatius Jr. was the son of Ignatius Higdon Sr.-b 1740 and Elizabeth Taylor-b 1750. Ignatius Sr was the son of the same William Higdon and Joannah Dent of my father's line. So, as you can see I truly can claim full citizenship in the Higdon Family Tree!
